Why Do Bird Beaks Overgrow?

And How to Fix It!

Why Do Bird Beaks Overgrow?

A bird’s beak should never become overgrown under ideal conditions—but this Quaker Parrot’s severe elongation made eating and grooming really complicated. Here’s why it happens and how we treat (and prevent!) it

🔍 Causes of Beak Overgrowth:

  • Nutritional Deficiencies (Low calcium, low vitamin A)
  • Congenital Disorders
  • Infectious diseases (viral, bacterial or parasitic)
  • Lack of Natural Wear (No chew toys, soft diet, no foraging)
  • Traumatic injuries

⚠️ Left untreated, overgrown beaks can lead to starvation, dehydration, and even death!

💡 Treatment:

  • Beak trimming (With specialized tools to reshape safely, do not use scissors!)
  • Diet correction (Pellets, veggies, fruit, calcium supplements)
  • Addressing underlying illness

🛑 Prevention is KEY!

  • Balanced diet
  • Chew toys & foraging
  • Regular beak checks
