Hypovitaminosis A in Turtles

Eye Swelling & Respiratory Issues (Essential Reading for Reptile Owners)

Vet Alert

This turtle arrived with SEVERE eye swelling – but after proper treatment, look at that transformation!

This is hypovitaminosis A, a preventable condition we see too often.

🔍 What caused it?

Hypovitaminosis A s a common nutritional problem caused by inadequate dietary intake of Vitamin A, related with:

  • Feeding only lettuce/cucumber (almost zero nutrients!)
  • Overfeeding shrimp/meat (high protein diets)
  • Using low-quality commercial foods
  • Ignoring water quality (for aquatic species)

🐢 High-Risk Species

  • Aquatic turtles (e.g., Red-Eared Slider, Yellow-Bellied Slider)
  • Insectivorous lizards
  • Other reptiles

⚠️ Common Signs to Watch For:

  • Swollen eyes or difficulty opening them
  • Breathing problems: wheezing, mouth breathing, nasal discharge
  • Ear infections (puffy lumps on the sides of the head)
  • Abnormal skin shedding & lesions
  • Lethargy & loss of appetite

✅ How to Prevent It:

  • Varied diet: Dark leafy greens (kale, dandelion, spinach), orange/yellow veggies (carrots, sweet potatoes), and high-quality commercial pellets for turtles. For lizards: gut-loaded insects
  • Clean water for aquatic turtles (filtration + regular changes)
  • Consult an exotic vet for tailored diet advice & early detection!
